Travel Tips for Your African Safari

Planning an African safari is unlike planning any other vacation. A safari is an immersion into living landscapes where wildlife sets the rhythm of each day. The more prepared you are before departure, the more extraordinary and seamless your experience will be.

Below is our comprehensive guide to African safari travel tips, including what to pack for safari, game drive etiquette, tipping guidelines, photography advice, and essential travel logistics.

🧳 What to Pack for Safari

Safari style is understated, comfortable, and functional.

Clothing

  • Neutral colors (khaki, olive, beige, brown)

  • Lightweight long sleeves for sun protection

  • Layering pieces (mornings can be cold, afternoons warm)

  • Light fleece or insulated jacket

  • Comfortable trousers or breathable safari pants

  • Swimsuit (many camps have pools)

  • One elevated but relaxed dinner outfit

Avoid bright colors and heavy patterns.

Footwear

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Sandals or slides for camp

  • No need for heavy hiking boots unless trekking

Essentials

  • SPF sunscreen

  • Sunglasses

  • Wide-brim hat

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Binoculars

  • Travel-size toiletries

  • Prescription medications (bring extras)

Laundry is typically available in camp, so packing light is encouraged.

🐘 Game Drive Etiquette

Wildlife sightings are most meaningful when approached respectfully. Understanding proper safari etiquette ensures both a respectful wildlife experience and exceptional sightings.

  • Always listen to your guide.

  • Keep voices low during sightings.

  • Never stand up unless instructed.

  • Do not feed wildlife.

  • Silence phones during drives.

  • Stay inside the vehicle unless at designated safe areas. In a shared vehicle, rotate seats with other passengers.

Your guide is not just a driver; they are a tracker, conservationist, and storyteller.

📸 Photography Tips

  • Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light.

  • A zoom lens (200mm+) enhances wildlife photography.

  • Keep dust protection for your equipment.

  • Always photograph responsibly, never pressure wildlife for a shot.

Sometimes, the most powerful moments are the ones you simply witness.

✈️ Travel Logistics & Preparation

  • Check passport validity (minimum 6 months) and ensure you have at least 2 blank pages in the passport for every country you plan to visit..

  • Review visa requirements well in advance.

  • Consult your physician regarding recommended vaccinations 6 weeks before travel, at latest..

  • We require that our travelers acquire travel insurance.

  • Pack in soft-sided luggage if flying on light aircraft.

We guide our guests through every logistical detail before departure.

💵 Cash & Currency on Safari

While most luxury camps accept major credit cards, safari destinations often operate in remote regions where access to banks and ATMs is limited.

We recommend:

  • Bringing clean, newer U.S. dollar bills (no tears or markings).

  • Carrying small bills ($5, $10, $20) for tipping.

  • Not relying on finding ATMs once in the bush.

In East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania), U.S. dollars are widely accepted in tourism areas. In South Africa, their local currency, Rand, may be preferred for small purchases outside of camp. Though they will accept US Dollars in a pinch.

Because safari camps are located in remote conservancies and national parks, card connectivity can occasionally be limited. Having some cash provides peace of mind.
